Lynn Harbor Park
One Step Closer to Lynn’s Newest Signature Destination
Last Tuesday, the Lynn Harbor Park project celebrated the recent groundbreaking of Phase 1 of this 30-acre waterfront park. The park promises an array of new amenities and open spaces that are designed to welcome the Lynn community and beyond, and bring the City one step closer to completing its signature waterfront destination. The development of the park represented a significant collaboration between public and private entities.
Brown, Richardson + Rowe has been working with the City of Lynn since 2017 when we began the Lynn Waterfront Open Space Master Plan public engagement process. The 30-acre former landfill site was identified as a prime location for a signature waterfront park. Construction of a major public park on the former landfill has the potential to transform Lynn's 305-acre waterfront area by mitigating and capping contaminated soils, restoring an eroded shoreline, and attracting new housing investment. The park's amenities will include a vibrant performance lawn with amphitheater seating, public plazas, a playground with natural materials and a butterfly garden, future athletic courts, and a serene waterfront promenade. The park's construction will deliver on the public's desire for new recreational activities and natural spaces that are welcoming to all members of the community.
The event on Tuesday brought together numerous Stakeholders, State and Local Officials, members of the Design Team, and more to celebrate this major step towards the opening of this exciting new park. The first phase of Lynn Harbor Park is set to be completed and open to the public in 2025. The opening of the park will mark a major reconnection for residents of Lynn with Lynn Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean.
BRR's design for Lynn Harbor Park drew upon our prior experience at Spectacle Island, a former landfill we helped transform into a popular park destination. Spectacle Island has been a popular 105-acre park in Boston's Harbor for nearly 20 years, with extensive trails, 360 degree views of the City and surrounding harbor islands, and a swimming beach. This project evolved out of the dual needs to clean up the harbor and dispose of excess fill from the Big Dig's Third Harbor Island Tunnel excavation. Working with engineers and soil scientists, the team was able to successfully cap the landfill and create a safe, pollution free landscape that thrives with native plants and supports local wildlife.
The groundbreaking event brought together numerous stakeholders, City and State officials, and design team members to tour the park and celebrate the construction progress.
Lynn Harbor Park will feature passive and active recreational amenities in the first phase of construction including walking trails, overlooks, picnic areas, and an amphitheater with a performance stage. Future phases will include sports courts, playgrounds, exercise areas, plazas, and more.
Spectacle Island in Boston Harbor has become a premier destination since its completion in 2006.

At the Lynn Harbor Park, BRR is continuing to work with the City of Lynn on a preliminary design to restore the park's 1,800 linear feet of degrading shoreline. BRR is honored to be a part of such a transformative public park and shoreline restoration project that will be a one-of-a-kind amenity for generations to come!
The Lynn Shoreline Restoration project will ensure the park will continue to serve residents of Lynn and beyond for generations to come.
