Historic Parkways Preservation Treatment Guidelines, Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Brown, Richardson + Rowe developed guidelines to safeguard the special character of the state’s historic parkways, while also addressing safety. Because parkways are intended for pleasure travel and recreation and include a publicly owned landscape that varies from a narrow corridor to an extensive reservation or state park, they are distinct from federal and state highways and local roads. The manual recommends a planning and design process as well as guidelines for the treatment of the parkway’s landscape and character-defining features, bicycle and pedestrian issues, alignment, lane width, curbs, guardrails, lighting, and drainage.
